Heatsink and Fan Installation Guide

The first step when installing a heatsink and fan is to make sure a thermal pad is in place on the bottom of the heatsink. The thermal pad is what allows the transfer of heat from the CPU to the heatsink. You should then remove the plastic protection film from the heat sink fully exposing the thermal pad.

When installing the heatsink make sure that you do not tilt or push the heatsink on to the processor. Any pressure to the edges of the chip can cause irrepealable damage to the processor. Instead be sure to place the heatsink squarely on to the four rubber pads on the processor.

Hold the heatsink in place and attach the metal clip to the first plastic tab on the socket. Assure that the other clip is aligned with the second tab on the socket. You will need to use a flat head screw driver or other appropriate device to attach the clip to the second tab.

Using the screwdriver press downward and away from the socket so the clip can move past the tab. Be very careful not to apply pressure to the heatsink itself. The next step is to press down and in, toward the socket, to secure the clip onto the tab.

Verify that the clip is fully seated on both tabs.

After the heat sink is attached connect the power lead into its power connector on the motherboard. TThe process is now completed. You need to double check the following:

  • The heatsink is resting squarly on the processor.
  • The heatsink is not touching the plastic socket.
  • All film has been removed from the base of the heatsink.
  • The retension tip is properly attached to the tabs on both sides of the socket.
  • The heatsink fan is plugged into the proper connector.

AMD has produced an excellent video showing this process step by step. You can find the video here.
