CPU Installation Guide

CPU installation is a simple process that requires some patience and knowledge to go smoothly. The first thing that you should check is that your motherboard and processor are compatible.

You should read through the manual that came with your motherboard, as this will tell you what settings if any need to be made with jumpers on the motherboard itself. On many of the newer motherboards these settings are made in the BIOS after the processor is installed.

Please read and follow the instructions in your manual. It is important.

The newer processors produced by both AMD and Intel use ZIF, or Zero Insertion Force, sockets for the joining of the processor and motherboard. To install one of these processors you will need to first raise the retention arm on the socket to the open position.

You can then align the pins on the processor and the socket (they only fit one way), and insert the CPU. This should require zero downward force (now you can see where they got the name for the sockets). If the processor does not fit easily check the alignment of the pins to the socket, that none of the pins are bent, and that the retention arm is fully raised.

After the CPU has been properly inserted, lower the retention arm to the locked position. You are now finshed with your CPU installation.

AMD has produced an excellent video showing the CPU installaton process in detail. You can see it here.
