Computer Monitor Guide

One the most used and important components of a pc is the computer monitor. You face many decisions when choosing computer monitors and the choices that you make will affect the price and display quality. This guide will discuss the main specifications and how they will affect your decision.

CRT or LCD

CRT monitors work like a traditional TV. The main selling point for these monitors are that they are cheaper than LCD monitors which is an import consideration if you are working with a budget. CRTs are desirable for people working in graphic design or are using their PC for multimedia purposes, because they are proven to produce much richer images and colors. They also work at a faster refresh rate, so images are never smeared when scrolling up or down or when viewing movies or games.

Some draw backs to a CRT computer monitor is screen flickers caused by metal strips behind the screen and space. These monitors take up much more room than LCD monitors.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitors are quickly gaining popularity. The main issue with LCDs is price, but as the technology continues to advance the price points are getting lower. LCDs use thousands of crystals that illuminate as different colors are passed through them from a backlight.

LCD monitors are smaller in size, because they have no picture tube. These monitors use a digital display, are lightweight, use little electricity and generate no heat. LCDs also have a sharp display while showing text and have brighter screens, which eliminates headaches and eyestrain for those who spend many hours at a time working on their computers.

Viewable Area

Computer monitor screen sizes are normally measured from one corner across to the corner diagnally across from it. This method of measuring was originally used by the early telivsion manufactures to make their screen sizes sound more impressive. This belief that bigger is better continues to this day and is now the stardard measuring procedure.

Dot Pitch and Resolution

Dot pitch is the measure of the amount of space between pixels. When looking at dot pitch remember that the smaller the number the better. The closer pixels are together, the sharper the image.

Resolution is the number of pixcels that the display has. Resolution is expressed by identifying the number of pixcels contained on the horizontal axis and on the vertical axis, such as 1024x768. Viewable area, refresh rate, and dot pitch all affect the maximum resolution that a monitor can display.
